Council staff get sneak-peak of new airport hangar
Clare County executive and management were in Shannon Free Zone on the invitation of Shannon Group to see progress on the development of an €18 million, 92,000 sq ft specialist aircraft painting hangar at Shannon Airport, adjacent to Shannon Free Zone.
Shannon Commercial Properties Managing Director, Gerry Dillon and Shannon Group Chief Operating Officer, Ray O’Driscoll, were on hand to showcase the hangar which is capable of accommodating some of the world’s largest aircraft.
Over 150 jobs have been created during the 14 month construction phase.
The project involves the construction of a steel framed wide-body aircraft paint hangar and internal ancillary office space, workshops, plant rooms and storage space. It will be the only hangar in Ireland capable of accommodating multiple aircraft types up to and including, the world’s largest passenger aircraft. Over 190 metres of new taxiway to facilitate aircraft movements is also being undertaken as part of the project.
It is the tenth hangar to be constructed at the airport, bringing the combined hangarage space to over 600,000 sq. ft.
The construction of the hangar is Shannon Group’s largest construction project to-date and is Ireland’s first aircraft hangar to be developed in almost 20 years. Shannon Group is leasing the hangar to IAC – International Aerospace Coating, a leading global aircraft painting, interiors and graphics specialist.
